Find the perfect foundation color for YOU!

First Step in finding the correct foundation is picking the correct hue and shade.

I know there are hundreds of ‘how to pick your foundation color tutorials’ on the World Wide Web like what is your vein color or test on your cheek in the sunlight and just pick! Well this is important and I want to make sure you understand! This is the easiest way for me to determine my clients skin tones!

What is a Hue? The Hue is the main properties of the color and will determine what your undertone skin color is.

Don’t make this complicated! It is very easy to understand. There are two tones cool and warm. I’m not going to get into color theory this week. I just want you to understand what foundation to pick for yourself or your client.

Everyone is one of two hues. Cool or Warm or yea some of us are both but I will tell you what color to use if you fall under the both category!

I am Cool – Pinkish and/or Blue Hues.
Cool tones are generally very pale skin or very dark skin.

I am Warm – Yellow Hues.
Warm tones are everyone in between.

I am both…
Both tones (sometime you may hear ‘neutral’) are generally skin that is:
1)     Warm undertone skin but has cool tone visually with Rosacea, acne, or scaring making your skin look cool/pink.
In this case stick with warm tone foundations.
2)     Cool undertone skin but has warm tone visually with freckles or sunspots making your skin look warm/yellow.
In this case be careful if you apply cool foundation on freckles or sunspots it may end up looking ashy. So make sure you stick with warm foundation even if your undertone is cool.

You can see in this picture…

The first shade is warm (closest to her lips)
The second shade is both
The third shade is cool.

"I can't tell my foundation color..." Okay if you look on your skin and you can’t tell. Make sure you are in natural lighting. Yes, go outside! Or go near a window.

Hold up a yellow & pink piece of clothing/paper or silver (cool) or gold (warm) jewelry near your neck or on the inside of your arm. Somewhere you don’t get a lot of sun to see your natural color.

"I still can’t tell!" Go to a makeup counter and ask the associate to show you a warm and cool color foundation on your skin so you can see the difference!

Next comes the easy part the shade!

There is light to medium to dark shades. Think of shades as a gradient color going from lightest to darkest. This will change on all of us if we are exposed to the sun, thus, getting darker and/or changing your hue.

The best way to match your shade is by matching your neck and chest. Don’t do the side of your cheek for matching the shade because that’s not your true color. Most of us have different shades on our face then our chest. And we don’t want to look like we are wearing a mask when we put on our foundation.

Good Luck!

Products in my personal makeup kit!

Thanks for stopping by to check out some of my favorite products in my own makeup kit!

1.) Anastasia's Perfect Brow pencil!
Do any of you have issues with a brow pencil where your hand is too heavy and you end up with too bold of a brow? Well, I really love this eyebrow pencil because it doesn't apply to your brow heavy. It takes a few strokes to get your desired boldness and that is so helpful for those who may not have experience with makeup applications. It is always easier to add more rather than to take away. It applies as a normal pencil but finishes as a powder. Then, the spooly at the other end allows you to shape and tame the unruly brows. It's so perfect! It is a bit expensive if you are used to drug store brands, but every product I mention in here is worth the price. Quality is definitely key. You can pick yours up online or in Sephora.

2.) MUFE Camouflage Cream Palette (Concealer)
This concealer is wonderful just for the fact that it is MUFE. But, other than that, this has several different colors to mix and work with for concealing. "Green?!" you ask? Yes! Green counters red spots. Add the green on a red spot, then put your favorite foundation over that and you no longer have red spots. You can get yours online or in store at any Sephora. They have different colors you can choose from; one with a purple instead of green. Purple counters yellow imperfections.

Color: Stockholm

I recently got this and was floored by the pigmentation of it. It may appear as a blue but it is chameleon. Shifts from blue to purple depending on the lighting you are in. It can also be used as a wet shadow for a totally different look. It is absolutely stunning and is a beautiful color for spring and summer. There are a few other colors. So, go to a Sephora near you and play with some to see which one you like. They are quite amazing.

-The HD Foundation is a medium to full coverage. It is transferable; which means it is easy to be wiped off or smudged. I really love the creamy natural look this gives. You can go totally natural or build it up to night wear. Just make sure to set it with set powder and setting spray.

-The Mat Velvet is a medium to full coverage and it not as easy transferable. It stays where you put it for the most part. They both have pink and yellow tones to them so make sure you ask someone to find a matching color to your skin. Their lighting isn't the best so ask to see if you could step outside to make sure it matches as best that it can in the sunlight.

Color : Oyster Girl

A lot of people have issues with how sticky this product is, but, if you can get past it, it is well worth it. I love how it makes my lips look. Gives it a plump, waxy gloss type look that you may see in the magazine ads. It smells amazing, too. Almost like chocolate. I am just crazy about these and the great thing about these when you are done with them, save the bottle (tube) and return it back to MAC along with 5 other products (6 in total) and you get a free lipstick or eyeshadow depending what type of MAC store you go to. Pro stores you get your choice of eyeshadow or lipstick.

There are a few of my favorites in my own personal makeup kit. Hope this helps you out. You have questions, we have answers!

Thank you for sending in some of your questions. Let's get right to it.

Question & Answers:

Q1:  "I have blue eyes and don't want to over do my eye shadow. What do I do with my eyeshadow to not downplay my blue eyes? Also, what is a good nude lip color ?" - Wendy Tesch

A1: Blue contacts (eyes) work great with warm tone eye shadows. Golds, brown, beige, yellow and orange looks great with blue because they are on the opposite end of the color wheel, so they compliment the blue. You could also go with green. They will make those baby blues really pop!
For nude lips, find a warm tone liner and lipsticks just slightly darker then your tone lips. Then add a translucent lip gloss for shine. If you want to really go nude add a little concealer over the lipstick.

Q2: "How long is the shelf life of makeup products like eyeshadow? I never know when to replace them." - Krista Marino Orne

A2: By law all products have to have the tuna can symbol. Creams don't last near as long as dry products because cream products are more susceptible to bacteria. Foundations, liquid liners, mascara are examples of products that need to be replenished more than shadows. There are products out there to sanitize your dry powders. Or just make your own with (at least) 75% alchohol and spritz the top layer to kill any bacteria. That bacteria could cause itchy eyes.

Q3:  "What do you recommend for under eye concealer, for older women, to prevent creasing in fine lines?" - Suzi Varela

A3- Any 'makeup artist' designed makeup line has great concealer: Makeup Forever, Bobby Brown, Smash Box, etc...
•The key to avoid creasing is using a finely graded loose powder and set the makeup. Really press the product it into the skin and brush off access.

Q4: "I'm interested in enrolling for your Master Artistry course soon. I see the brushes are included; what about the makeup? Is there a certain brand to use?" - Amy Moreno

A4: At this time, we don't offer makeup kits with classes. I mainly use Makeup Forever products. Online, you can sign up to the Makeup Forever artist program and they will give you discounted starter kits. If you are in Vegas, go to Sephora on Las Vegas blvd. to Makeup Forever's pro store. The Artists there can help you put together a kit.

Q5: "Which cosmetic stores offer their discounts once you're certified and which stores are best to start building my makeup kit?" - Anjy Boussy-Wehbe and Rachael Shaffer

A5: Click here for more information ( http://makeuponlinetraining.com/customer-service-2/pro-discounts/ ) Makeup Forever, MAC, Stila, Urban Decay, NYX, TEMPTU PRO, Smashbox.

•You can also get really great deals on makeup at beauty expos. IMATS is a great start. It's a great chance to play with the makeup and see what you like.

Thank you so much for your questions. I hope they have helped you!
